BIRDS
Most birds lay their eggs in nests.
Robins lay blue eggs in a nest high in a tree. A mother robin usually lays four eggs, one egg each day.
Then the mother snuggles up to the eggs to keep them warm. While she sits there, she may preen her fathers to keep herself clean.
Tiny babies hatch from the eggs in about two weeks. Each baby pecks at the egg until finally it can get out. Then the baby bird cuddles up to the mother to keep warm. The babies also cuddle with each other.
Both parents bring worms for the growing babies to eat. In about two weeks, the babies are ready to fly away. Then they can find food for themselves.

EL PERRO Y EL LOBO

En una casa cerca del bosque vivía un perro que se encargaba de cuidar la propiedad de sus amos.
Un día el perro se alejó de su casa porque deseaba conocer a los animales que vivían en el bosque. Encontró muchos animales que parecían muy felices y pensó que sería divertido jugar libremente con todos ellos. De regreso a su casa, el perro se encontró con un lobo. Los dos se miraron sorprendidos. “Nos parecemos tanto que podríamos ser hermanos”, pensaron. El perro y el lobo comenzaron a platicar y se fueron caminando juntos. Sintieron hambre y el lobo le propuso al perro que cazaran algo para comer. –Mira- explicó el lobo –podemos cazar una libre. No es nada sencillo así que debes ayudarme-. –Pero yo nunca he cazado- se disculpó el perro. – Entonces ¿Qué comes-. –Tengo un dueño que siempre me alimenta. A mí me gusta estar con él y ayudarle a cuidar la casa donde vivimos. –A mí- dijo el lobo –lo que me gusta es cazar-. Después de un rato el perro y el lobo encontraron una liebre. El lobo la persiguió y la atrapó. Llegó la noche y los dos se fueron a dormir. El perro se sentía tan confundido por la forma de vida del lobo que no pudo descansar. A la mañana siguiente, el perro decidió volver con sus amos e invitó al lobo. Quería compartir su casa y su comida con él. El lobo entró a la casa del perro. Mientras comían, el perro le explicó lo agradable que era vivir y jugar con los amos. El lobo pensó que si el viviera como el perro no tendría la libertad ni las emociones a las que estaba acostumbrado. Entonces comentó que no se sentía a gusto en la casa. Ambos compararon sus costumbres y concluyeron que las de uno y otro eran buenas, pero que cada quién debía escoger las que más les gustaran. El lobo se despidió amistosamente del perro. Cada uno respetó la forma de vida del otro y siguieron siendo buenos amigos.

UN DÍA DE PESCA
Cada año, Silvia y Rubén pasan las vacaciones en el pueblo del tío Eduardo, que está cerca de un río, al que los niños pueden ir a pescar bañarse y retozar con sus primos y otros amigos del lugar. El año pasado, cuando Silvia y Rubén llegaron al pueblo, se sorprendieron de los cambios que había: mucha gente en las calles, nuevas casas cerca del río y hasta un mercado improvisado con toldos de colores. El tío Eduardo explicó a los niños que una compañía había abierto un taller maquilador y que mucha gente había llegado a trabajar en él. Desde que Silvia y Rubén llegaron, invitaron a sus primos para ir temprano a pescar en el río. Los primos aceptaron, pero no con mucho entusiasmo. Algo había cambiado y los niños no sabían qué era. En efecto, al día siguiente cuando los niños se levantaron para ir al río, los primos decidieron no acompañarlos. Silvia y Rubén, sin desanimarse, prepararon las cañas de pescar y los gusanitos de carnada. Cuando llegaron al río, Silvia y Rubén se quedaron sorprendidos. En las orillas del río se amontonaba una gran cantidad de basura, los árboles casi no tenían hojas, y un olor desagradable llenaba el ambiente. ¡Mira, Rubén cerca de esa agua sucia hay peces muertos! Dijo Silvia. Los niños corrieron a contar a su tío lo que habían encontrado. Don Eduardo gritó: ¡esa agua sucia debe venir del taller maquilador! Inmediatamente, Don Eduardo, acompañado de los niños, invitó a unos vecinos para que todos juntos fueran a hablar con el encargado del taller para pedirle que no tirara desperdicios al río.

La brujita Elire.
Elire vivía en un lejano lugar donde los niños estudiaban para reparar estrellas, para ser médicos de flores y para ser magos. La primera vez que Elire fue a la escuela tenía mucho miedo: no conocía a nadie y las clases ya habían comenzado. Aunque le temblaban las piernas, no lo pensó más, se despidió de su mamá y entró a la escuela. La maestra Encanto, que era una de las mejores brujas, recibió a Elire y esperó a que se sentara. Luego, dirigiéndose a un niño, preguntó: A ver, Togur, ¿recuerdas la lección de ayer? Togur se levantó y dijo muy serio: MININO, MININO, MININO PABILO, QUE APAREZCA UNA BARRA DE SABROSO CHOCOLATE. De pronto, en vez de chocolate, apareció un pedazo de vela. Todos, incluso Elire, se reían y gritaban: ¡SE EQUIVOCÓ! ¡SE EQUIVOCÓ! La maestra preguntó: ¿Quién quiere ayudar a Togur? -Yo le ayudo- ofreció una niña-. Se dice: MININO, MININO, MININO COLATE, QUE APAREZCA UNA BARRA DE SABROSO CHOCOLATE. Todos aplaudieron cuando apareció una enorme barra de chocolate. Ahora vamos a jugar al salto volador anunció la maestra-. El que no sepa la fórmula no podrá volar. Escuchen: ZUMBACA, ZUMBACA, ZUMBACA LARIÓN, QUE VUELE, QUE VUELE ASÍ COMO AVIÓN. Algunos dijeron la fórmula equivocada y se cayeron de sentón, pero todos se rieron mucho. La maestra enseñó otras fórmulas mágicas, útiles para la ocasión. Elire estaba tan entusiasmada, que levantó la mano para decir una fórmula mágica: ESTERE, CELITAS, ESTERE TRELLITAS, QUE TODO EL SALÓN SE LLENE DE ESTRELLITAS. Todos aplaudieron cuando miles de pequeñas estrellas aparecieron por todos lados. Al final, a los niños escribieron las fórmulas en su cuaderno para estudiarlas. Elire regresó feliz a su casa, besó a su mamá y le contó cuánto se había divertido en su primer día de clases.
